Trade and communication have been badly affected due to inundation of Hili Land Port and the road on both
sides of the border following heavy rains and onrush of water from hills in the past six days.Besides, the water-logging of the area has forced the authorities to shut down educational institutions.
According to the locals, entire Hili town has been submerged by rainwater since August 17. “No place is left dry. It is knee-deep everywhere here,” said Zahidur Rahman of Hili Land port area.
Almost all houses, business establishments, warehouses of importers and exporters, educational institutions in the upazila have been inundated. People were also seen shifting their households to higher places.
However, locals of the area blamed the faulty drainage system in Hili for the water-logging.
As the link road between India and Bangladesh has remained under the rainwater since last Wednesday, the trade between these two countries is being hampered. “Unless the rainwater recedes, the trading activities will
not return to normalcy,” said Abdur Rahman Liton, general secretary of Hili Land Port Clearing and Forwarding Agent Association.
Harun Ur Rashid, convener of Importer Groups of Hili Land port in Hakimpur upazila, said at least 10 warehouses have gone under water. The traders will face huge losses, he added.
Md Abdur Rafique, officer-in charge of Hili Immigration, said the immigration service is going on as usual, but the immigrants are suffering a lot due to the water-logging.
Md Abdul Mannan, principal of Hakimpur Degree College said due to water-logging the educational activities have remained suspended since Wednesday.
Shakhwat Hossain Shilpi, mayor of Hakimpur Municipality, said it is a nagging problem facing this municipality for faulty drainage system. A project to remove this problem has been submitted to concerned ministry, he said.
In Lalmonirhat, several hundred villagers of Saptibari, Chawratari, Jamurtari and Sarpukur areas of Aditmari upazila of the district barricaded the Burimari-Lalmonirhat highway on Monday for one hour demanding immediate removal of the rainwater from the area that has remained waterlogged for five days. They withdraw their blockade on assurance of measures from Aditmari police.
Incessant rain and onrush of water from upstream inundated many areas of the district.
Normal life in some urban areas, including Lalmonirhat municipality, has been hampered due to water-logging, which has been caused by bad drainage system.
Nearly 300 families of the villages are facing the acute problem of water-logging.
Jahurul Islam, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Aditmari, visited the areas and said a canal will be dug to drain out the water.
