Guardian ‘tortured’ by teachers in Cox’s Bazar

A group of schoolteachers allegedly tortured a guardian of one of their pupils for protesting against irregularities at the school. The guardian was identified as Ayat Ullah. This incident occurred at Kharulia High School in Kharulia area of Cox’s Bazar on Sunday. A video of the assault has become viral on social media.

Eyewitnesses and locals said Nafis Abir, son of Ayat Ullah, is a Level Two student of the Kharulia KG and Pre-Cadet School. Abir did not attain first-grade results in the exams, for which Ayat Ullah went to the school to find out the reason for his son’s results. A discussion with head teacher Borhan Uddin ensued. Borhan Uddin called Zahirul Haque, a teacher of Kharulia High School. The three discussed the matter, in the course of which Borhan Uddin pushed Ayat Ullah, who fell on the ground. The teachers then tied Ayat’s hands and feet with a rope. Two teachers, one of whom was not of the first duo, beat up the

guardian. The victim, Ayat Ullah, told The Independent: “They tortured me when I  asked why my son did not get the desired results and queried about irregularities at the school.”

“A few days ago, teachers were appointed at Kharulia High School without any recruitment notice. Many irregularities have occurred in KG schools. Many teachers committed irregularities while evaluating the answer scripts,” he alleged.

When Zahirul Haque was asked about the incident, he said, “Ayat Ullah was a student of our school. He was punished for being irresponsible.” Haque also claimed that he was not involved in the incident.

When Borhan Uddin was contacted on his mobile phone, he claimed he was not Borhan Uddin, and said, “Ayat was angry. The school administration decides about the entire academic curriculum.” He then disconnected the line.

The upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar, Noman Hossain, said such behaviour was not expected of teachers. This was an instance of extreme violation of human rights. People involved in the incident need to be dealt with under the law, he added. Ranjit Barua, officer-in-charge of Cox’s Bazar police, said a case has been filed against 11 people, including Borhan Uddin, Zahirul Haque and three other members of the staff of the school. “We are trying to detain them.”
