BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia held a meeting with the top leaders of her party-led 20-party alliance yesterday night to discuss the country's latest political situation and other relevant issues. The meeting, about 2-hour long, began shortly after 9pm at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan political office and ended after 11pm, with Khaleda Zia in the chair. Meeting sources said the issue of the upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral by-election was discussed in the meeting where 20-party leaders expressed their united support, and pledged to work for the BNP-nominated candidate.
Referring to various media reports over fielding by Jamaat of its leader Selim Uddin as a mayoral candidate for the DNCC by polls, alliance leaders termed the news as rumor and unsubstantiated as no formal announcement has been made by the party.
20-party leaders also discussed various organisational issues apart from the country's current political situation.
The BNP-led alliance leaders discussed the cases against BNP Chairperson and various developments over the trial of two graft cases. Shedding light on the alleged government ploy to disqualify Khaleda Zia for the polls through a conviction, the leaders said they will not allow the holding of any election without the BNP chief, said the sources.
The leaders also proposed for holding a rally in the capital at the end of this month as the DMP had denied permission to the BNP to hold a rally on January 5.
