Bar Council polls today
The election of Bangladesh Bar Council, the central body of all the lawyers, is scheduled to be held today. The casting of votes will be started from 10.00am and continue till 5.00pm without any break.
A total of 61 candidates are vying for 14 posts and a total of 43,302 voters are eligible to cast their votes in the election.
Although the election was scheduled to be held on May 20, the apex court fixed August 26 for conducting the election following a petition moved by a lawyer saying that the Bar Council election was going to be held with a faulty voter list.
Later, the authorities concerned amended the voter list as per the apex court directive and all preparation has been taken to conduct the election in the meantime.
Sammilita Ainjibi Samannoy Parishad (SASP), a forum of pro-Awami League lawyers, and Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad (JAOP), a body of BNP-led four party alliance lawyers, are the main rivals among the four panels contesting in the election.
