Prothom Alo editor, two reporters get bail

A Jhenidah court yesterday granted bail to Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman, staff correspondent Azad Rahman and local journalist Subrata Sarkar in 5 defamation cases. The court also granted bail to Azad Rahman and Subrata Sarkar in two extortion cases. Lawyers Azizur Rahman, Shafiullah, SM Mashiur Rahman, Mohammad Aminul Islam, and Prashanta Kumar Karmakar represented the defendants in the court. According to lawyers, the Prothom Alo editor and the other journos appeared before the Jhenidah judicial magistrate's court yesterday and applied for bail in five defamation cases. After a hearing, the court granted them bails. The court also granted Azad and Subrata bail in two extortion cases after the defendents filed bail petitions. Earlier, following publication of a series of reports in the daily Prothom Alo on ‘gross irregularities’ in the purchase of 15 power tillers with subsidy money in Kotchandpur Upazila of Jhenidah, defamation cases were filed against Matiur Rahman, Azad Rahman, and  Subrata Sarkar. Local Juba league leaders and activists, who were nominated to receive the power tillers, had filed these cases against the journalists.
