Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday accused BNP-Jamaat of abductions in the country. “After their failure to forge any tough movement against the government in the past nine years, BNP-Jamaat leaders are now involved in kidnappings in the country,” the AL leader said.
Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, made the allegation after inaugurating a photo exhibition on the violence by the opposition before and after the general election on January 5, 2014. The AL publicity and publications sub-committee had organised the exhibition at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka. He also claimed that a BNP leader, who went into hiding in Sweden after the 2014 election, was involved in cases of enforced disappearances in Bangladesh.
“His name is Nahid. He along with other leaders and activists of BNP-Jamaat had carried out subversive activities before and after the January 5 polls. From Sweden, he has been controlling groups of killers in the country,” he said.
The minister added: “Those who had resorted to bloodshed in the country in the name of a so-called movement were now staging drama of enforced disappearance.”
Quader said Bangladeshis would not vote for BNP as “they burnt people to death in Pakistani style. They are the enemy of humanity.”
At the same time, he called upon AL leaders and workers to remain alert to foil BNP’s bid to power. “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is the lighthouse of distressed humanity and so we will have to work hard to bring her to power again,” he added.
