Mohammed Ibrahim scored once and set twice for Edward William Sheringham, as Saif Sporting Club trounced Chittagong Abahani Limited by 3-0 in the Saif Power Battery Bangladesh Premier League football yesterday.

Held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, in the day’s first match all three goals were scored in the first half when Edward William struck twice and Ibrahim added one goal to inflict the easy defeat on the Chittagong Abahani, who were one of the title contenders.

After conceding the shocking defeat, the possibility to clinch the third place for the reigning runners-up became under doubt when the Chittagong giants had already been derailed from the championship fight after dropping points to eat up the chance to retain the runners-up trophy.

In fact after the humiliating defeat it would be very tough for Chittagong Abahani to be third when they will face the champions Abahani Limited in their last encounter.

Saif Sporting Club, the debutant in the Professional Football League this season, showed some of their characters to fight for the championship, as they expressed their commitment before their launching in the elites’ competition remaining in confrontation up to 15th round.

After the stumbling, the newcomers roared back to remain unbeaten in five matches in a row, though it was too late but got the credential as a new powerhouse in the country’s football.

However, from the beginning the match both sides were sharing the possession almost evenly but Saif were better to open spaces up to half an hour mark and took the lead on 25th minute.

Saif went ahead through William Sheringham who opened his account when the goal came from Ibrahim’s quickly taken free-kick from few yards distance from the corner of the box, which found the English forward closer to the post and his header went to top corner of the neat (1-0).

Inspired by taking lead, Sheringham doubled his account and also for the team eight minutes later and this time also Ibrahim assisted, Saif had another free-kick in optimum position and Ibrahim floated it inside the area but a header of a defender was not cleared but went to Shringham’s way who perfected his second header (2-0).

Ibrahim himself scored the third one in the injury time of the first half when his effort deflected a defender Faisal and went into the post (3-0).
