Stocks open week down as major sectors dip

Stocks witnessed sluggish trading on the first day of the week yesterday as most indices on the country’s both bourses - Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) - witnessed a fall on lower activities of large-cap securities, reports BSS.

The major falling sectors were food and allied, travel and leisure, textile, ceramics and insurance. A total of 156 securities of the large-cap group incurred loss due to lower activities.

The broader index DSEX of DSE finished the first session of the week with 34.42 points down at 6,268.42. The Shariah DSES and the blue-chip DS30 also followed the same trend with 4.73 points down at 1,402.87 and with 12 points down at 2,283.22.

The daily turnover in value at DSE declined to Tk 485 crore from Thursday’s Tk 518.76 crore and the volume of shares fell to 12.48 crore from 13.67 crore shares of the previous session.

At DSE, out of the day’s 335 securities, prices of 96 securities closed higher against 189 losing issues.

The top five gaining companies were Wata Chemical, BSCCL, GRAMEENS2, Intech and National Tubes. The major losers were Shyampur Sugar, United Air, DSSL, Monno Ceramic and Agrani Insurance.

UPGDCL topped the turnover list followed by Ifad Autos, National Tubes, City Bank and Lafarge Surma Cement.

Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed the day of the week with downward trends with its major CASPI 101.09 points down at 19,393.89.

At CSE, 237 issues were traded. Of those, 73 closed higher and 138 closed lower when 80.59 lakh shares worth Tk 24.25 crore changed hands.
