Ambassador Ziauddin made permanent rep to OAS

Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States of America Mohammad Ziauddin has been made Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the Organisation of American States (OAS), reports UNB. Ambassador Ziauddin presented copies of his Letters of Commission to Secretary General of the OAS Ambassador Luis Almagro Lemes on Thursday at the OAS Headquarters in Washington DC. Ambassador Lemes applauded Bangladeshs effort in eradicating poverty and advancement in socio-economic development.
He suggested Bangladesh to remain engaged with other regional organisations of the American continent. The Secretary General also appreciated Bangladeshs role in dealing with the Rohingya crisis. On December 1, 2016, Bangladesh was granted the status of Permanent Observer to the oldest regional organisation in the world.
The Washington DC-based organisation has 34 members and 72 permanent observers.
Diplomat Ziauddin told the Secretary General that the Permanent Observer status of the OAS will contribute to the government of Bangladeshs endeavor to expand its diplomatic outreach.
He said Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina believes that in todays globalised world, it is inevitable and imperative to build and strengthen friendship with friends in distant shore.
The Ambassador assured the Secretary General that Bangladesh will provide a value to the organisation based on its shared convictions in the areas of democracy, human rights, security and development.
Bangladesh plans to use the status as Permanent Observer to strengthen
its ties with the region
and to promote mutual understanding and assistance to the Hemisphere, said the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington on Friday.
The Ambassador briefed the Secretary General on Bangladeshs growing economy and women empowerment as well as development activities under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
