Iqbal Mahmood, a former secretary of telecommunications ministry, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Bangla-desh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) for the next three years.
He is replacing Sunil Kanti Bose whose contract will end on Oct 22.
The government appointed Sunil Kanti Bose as the fifth chairman of BTRC on 23 October, 2012.
Mahmood, currently on post retirement leave, can join office on Oct 23 cancelling his leave, a government order yesterday said.
His three-year tenure will be counted from the day he takes charge.
Mahmood, a 1981 batch BCS admin cadre officer, became a secretary in June 2008 when serving as acting secretary to the posts and telecommunications ministry.
He served as the alternative executive director of Asian Development Bank (ADB) till November 2014.
Currently, he went on Post Retirement Leave last December after his tenure ended.
In 2012, the government created the post of ‘senior secretary’ and promoted eight bureaucrats, including Mahmood who was the secretary to the Economic Relations Division at that time.
He was made the ADB’s alternate executive director in November that year and Iqbal Mahmood, the sixth chairman of the country’s telecom regulatory authority, will serve for the next three years.
In a separate order yesterday, the government has appointed a retired Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Zahurul Haq as the commissioner of BRTC on contractual basis for three years.
