Witness deposition begins
in Rupa murder case

First additional district and sessions judge Abul Mansur Miah yesterday began recording the deposition of witnesses in the Rupa gang rape and murder case. The public prosecutor submitted a list of nine prosecution witnesses to the court. Among these witnesses, sub-Inspector of the Aronkhola police outpost under Madhupur upazila, Aminul Islam, testified yesterday.

Miah, also the acting judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal of Tangail, fixed January 7 and 8 for recording the testimonies of the other witnesses.

Zakia Sultana Rupa, 23, daughter of the late Jilhaj Promanik of Asanbari village in Tarash upazila of Sirajganj district, was killed after being gang-raped in a running bus on August 25. She went to visit a relative in Mymensingh from Bogra after writing a teachers’ registration examination.

The killers dumped her body in Tangail’s Madhupur forest. The girl could not be identified instantly and the body was sent to the Tangail Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Being an unclaimed body, it was later buried in a Tangail graveyard.

The victim’s brother, Hafizur Rahman, learned about the unidentified girl from newspaper reports. He came to Madhupur police station and identified his sister from the photos of the victim’s body taken by the police before autopsy. The body was then handed over to the bereaved family from Tangail graveyard.

Police came to know that Rupa was returning to Mymensingh from Bogra in a ‘Soa’ Paribahan bus. Five staff members of the bus were arrested on August 29.

They were identified as: Shameem, Zahangir, Akram, bus driver Habib and supervisor Safar Ali Gendhu.

They were produced before the chief judicial magistrate in Tangail, where they gave confessional statements before the court.
