The security of Mawlana Bhashani University of Science and Technology, the lone public university of the district, has remained at stake since its inception 18 years ago. The university was established in 2001 on 57 acres. It has three gates, three academic buildings, five halls, one administrative building, VC’s residence, guest house, dormitory for teachers and third-class and fourth-class employees, and a cafeteria. Besides, the mazar of Mawlana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, five public roads, two primary schools, two high schools, one college, one kindergarten, one hafzkhana and a temple are also situated on the campus.

Santosh Bazaar is also situated by the side of the campus. Locals use the roads inside the university for daily shopping. The boundary wall of the university was established three years ago at a cost of Tk. 1.50 crore. However, the low wall is not enough to prevent outsiders from entering the university campus, according to sources.

Outsiders often invade the campus and attack the studetns of the university. Ragib Al- Rana of the mathematics department and Muklesur Rahman of the chemistry department were recently injured after being attacked by a group of outsiders.

Moreover, three electric motors used for lifting water, 56 fans from Muktijhodda Abdul Mannan Hall and other household appliances from the VC’s house were pilfered.

It is alleged that at least 75 Security guards are necessary to guard the campus. Currently, only 30 guards have been employed for this purpose.

Diversion roads, adequate number of security guards and shifting of some schools on the campus to other places can resolve the  security problems.

Dr Sirajul Islam, proctor of the university, said: "We've planned to build diversion roads. We've demanded 30 more security guards from the UGC. But our appeal is still under consideration."
