The government is going to import a total of 19,45,000 metric tons of fuel oil including 13 lakh metric tons of diesel from 10 countries without inviting any tender to meet the demands of fuel oil during the upcoming Boro cultivation season.
The energy ministry has prepared 12 different proposals for importing four categories of fuel -- diesel, furnace oil, jet oil and octane, and the proposals will be placed at the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Purchase today, sources in the ministry said.
The fuel would be imported under the government-to-government deals at a total cost of Tk 8,113.39 crore to meet up the demand for the next six months (July to December), the sources added.
According to the proposals, 3,50,000 MT of fuel of Tk 1,435.73 crore would be imported from China, 5,70,000 MT from Kuwait, 3,55,000 MT from Malaysia, 2,10,000 MT from Philippine, 1,10,000 MT from Vietnam, 1,70,000 MT from UAE, 70,000 MT from Indonesia, 60,000 MT from Brunei, 50,000 MT from Oman and 30,000 MT from Turkey.
Chairman of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) AM Badrudduja told The Independent that they are importing the quantities of fuel under the state to state deal as per the decision of the government.
“The BPC was importing fuel under the government-to-government deals since 2003 to avoid manipulation by the contractors,” he said.
“We are purchasing fuel from the countries justifying the international market prices,” he added.
The BPC chairman informed that they have enough fund to import the required fuel.
The BPC annually imports 1.4 million tonnes of crude oil from 10 countries under state-to-state deals and refines it at the state-run Eastern Refinery Limited.
