The High Court on Thursday directed Comilla City Corporation Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku to surrender before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka in connection with a graft case, reports UNB.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim also ordered the court to grant bail to Sakku after his surrender in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Besides, the HC issued a rule asking Sakku and the government to explain why the lower court order exempting Sakku of the corruption case should not be scrapped.
Sakku and the authorities concerned were made respondents to the rule.
The court came up with the order and rule following a petition filed by the nti-Corruption Commission (ACC) challenging the legality of the lower court order.
Earlier, on November 21, the CMM court cleared Sakku of the graft charges.
Following a petition filed by Sakku's counsel Masud Ahmed Talukder, Judge of Dhaka's Special Court-8 Shamim Ahmed passed the order saying there was no element to frame charges against him.
On May 7, 2008, Shahin Ara Mamtaz, assistant director of ACC, filed the case against Sakku and his wife Afroza Jesmin for concealing information of wealth worth Tk 12.50 crore and amassing wealth of Tk 4.57 crore illegally.
On February 4, 2016, the ACC submitted a charge-sheet against the mayor dropping the name of his wife.
