BCL 70th founding anniversary celebration

Factional clash leaves 22 injured at CU

At least 22 activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Chittagong University (CU) unit, the student front of the ruling Awami League, were injured in a factional clash between two groups centring lined up in the procession to observe BCL 70th founding anniversary on the campus.

This time they vandalised 10 rooms of Shahamanat Hall and Shuhrawardy Halls and two motor bikes. At one stage police conducted extensive batons charges to control the situation.

The two groups are reportedly loyalist of Chittagong mayor AJM Nasir Uddin.  

According to the eye witnesses, to observe BCL’s 70th founding anniversary, CU BCL activists were trying to bring out a procession from CU railway station area at around 1pm. When they started to line up for the procession, an activist of ‘Sixty Nine’ group named Saikul allegedly pushed another activists of ‘VX’ group named Sadek Hossain Tipu. Centring this, they locked in an altercation in the CU zero point area. After a while the two groups again locked in a clash in front of Suhrawardy Hall. This time they exchange stones and threw abusive language each other.

 “We have given some students primary treatment. Of them two were in a critical condition. They have been sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for better treatment,” said Dr Abu Tayob, medical chief of CU medical centre.

“We are trying to control this situation. To avert further clashes additional law enforcers have been deployed on the campus,” said Md Belal, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hathazari Police Station. Liton Mitro, assistant proctor of CU said, “After hearing this news we rushed to the spot along with police personnel to bring the situation under control. Some BCL activists were injured. Now the situation is clam. Till now we do not receive  any complaint. Step will be taken after receiving complaint.”
