Of the drugs the most popular among the addicts nowadays in Bangladesh is yaba and, alarmingly, over the past six years its use has increased 77 times in this country. This yaba is destroying the young generation and the substance is now easily available everywhere in the country. If the state fails to check its smuggling through the porous Myanmar border right now, the days are probably not far away when there will not be a family left whose member is not addicted to this health ruining drug. It is no overstatement to say that yaba is poised to destroy the life force and vitality of a very large number of young people, and also that of others in relatively senior age groups, now and in the future in Bangladesh
Yaba’s spread has become so pervasive that it is important to look at this problem differently: whether there is a conspiracy on to destroy the future of Bangladesh as the imperialistic power did to the Chinese people in the nineteenth century by deliberately spreading opium addiction among them. The yaba tablets which are consumed in Bangladesh are all produced in the 37 factories located in Myanmar across the Naf river close to the border of Bangladesh. Interestingly, according to a vernacular daily yesterday that quoted Rohingya sources, the Myanmarese people do not even touch these tablets whose ultimate destination is only Bangladesh.
It is equally worrying to note that some people from whom we would expect resistance against yaba such as members of law enforcing agencies, political activists and people involved in law profession, they are actually acting as helpers in the spread of yaba in Bangladesh. Therefore, the high authorities at different law enforcing agencies must take steps accordingly to contain yaba’s spread after weeding out the unscrupulous among them. Controlling their own deviant members first, the law enforcement bodies must move courageously to nab the influential people involved in flourishing yaba’s illegal business.
It has been learnt that yaba is entering Bangladesh through 42 points located mostly in hill districts along the border of Myanmar. Besides land routes the smugglers are bringing the tablet through sea routes also. However, it will not be possible to control yaba addiction without the help of the Myanmar government. It has become a diplomatic challenge for Bangladesh to convince the Myanmar government so that they actually take steps to destroy yaba making factories near the border of Bangladesh.
Yaba has already destroyed many families. There are also noted serious cases when yaba addicted teenagers are even murdering their own parents and other near and dear ones when the latter stand in the way of their addiction. Thus, yaba’s degenerative effects are far worse than other addictive substances. Experts are of the opinion the increase of murder, rape, robbery and abduction in society has something to do with the increase of yaba use in the country. This is particularly true for the greater Chittagong region where reportedly yaba is consumed most compared to other places. It is only expected that the ones in the upper echelons of the administration would take the present yaba menace in society with the seriousness that it deserves.
