An expatriate young girl and her mother have allegedly been tortured physically for refusing to pay toll for constructing a building at Chhaialkandi village Bhedarganj upazila of Shariatpur, reports UNB. The victims were identified as Sumi Akhter, 20, daughter of Babul Dewan, and her mother Josna Begum, residents of the village. Sumi used to work as a domestic help in Saudi Arabia. Sumi said her father had long been at loggerheads with his cousins Malek Dewan and Sumon Dewan over the ownership of a piece of land.
After returning home from Saudi Arabia on last Thursday, she started to construct a three-storey building on the land piece. Bulbul Dewan, a local and associate of Malek and Sumon, demanded Tk 1 lakh from Sumi as toll, she added. As she refused to pay the toll, Bulbul brought an allegation against Sumi of having an affair with his brother-in-law Arif Dewan.
Bulbul along with his wife Moni Akhter and his followers went to Sumi's house on Sunday night and beat the young girl and her mother mercilessly with an iron rod, leaving the duo injured seriously.
The attackers also pierced the private organs of the girl, alleged the victim. Later, Sumi and her mother were taken to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, said Sajeda Khatun, senior consultant of the hospital. Meanwhile, police visited the spot, said officer-in-charge of Sakhipur Police Station M Manjurul Haque Akond.
