Ayna Bibir Pala

Welcoming the new year with new hope and aspiration, two prominent theatre troupes of the country are going to stage their popular plays today evening at two separate venues of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.

Among the two troupes, Natyadhara will stage its admired production ‘Ayna Bibir Pala’—based on a story from Mymensingh Gitika, a rich collection of folk-ballads of our country—at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA at 7pm.

The play is an ultimate evidence of such dramatic depiction that weaves woes, agonies and dilemmas of women in a traditional narrative form.

Directed and dramatised by Rabiul Alam, the theatre production raises questions about the progress of women and their fate after so many years, and is an adaptation of the legend of Ayna Bibi from Mymensingh Gitika. Ayna Bibi appears as a symbol of traditional Bengali woman, confronts the question of virginity, after getting married with Uzzal. Eventually, she was abandoned by her newly-married husband and in-laws.

After being abandoned by her husband, Ayna, the protagonist in the play, goes back to her paternal house and starts counting the days for her husband to come back.

However, at her surprise, Ayna comes to know a few days later that Uzzal has tied his knot with another girl, leaving her forever. Out of frustration, Ayna, one day, kills herself  by jumping into a pond. The title role of the play is performed by Shamima Akter Mukta and Nishir Saren appears as Uzzal.

The probable cast of the play also includes Sagar Ahmed Rubel, Shamsunnahar Beauty, Muniruzzaman, Kazi Uzzal, Rokunuzzaman Uzzal, Suman, Tomal, Chanchal, Sudipta Sharma and Leon Imam, among others.

On the other hand, Mad Theatre will stage yet another show of their maiden play ‘Naddiyo Natim’ at the BSA’s Studio Theatre Hall at the same time.

Directed by Asadul Islam, the play ‘Naddiyo Natim’ has been made based on the novel of Humayun Ahmed’s ‘Ke Kotha Koy’. Naddiyo Natim is a main character of this novel. Matin Uddin is an Uzbek poet. He reversed the spelling of his name – Naddiyo Natim. He got acquainted with Komal during his tuition. Meghdut plays the role of Komal. Muna is Komal’s mother, played by Subarna.

Physically-disabled Komal revealed a secret of her life to Matin, who jumped off the roof to protect Meghdut’s secret. Interestingly, all three actors in the play – Asadul Islam, his wife Sonia Hasan Subarna, and their daughter Meghdut -are from the same family.
