The total number of voter has gone up by 2,29,64,880 since 2008, EC's Acting Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said at a press briefing at Nirbachan Bhaban to reveal the draft of new voter lists. According to the voter lists updated in 2008, the figure was 8,10,87,003. Anyone having any objection in this regard to the draft voter lists will have to contact the EC by January 17 as the lists are displayed at important places in districts, upazilas and union parishads, Ahmed said. Among the new voters, the information of 33,32,593 were collected in 2017 while the information of 9,62,296 in 2016, he said, adding names of 17,48,934 dead voters were deleted from the lists. Among the total voters, 5,24,62,865 are male and 5,15,89,018 are female, Ahmed said. The final voter lists will be published on January 31, he added.

The Commission earlier registered 24.3 lakh people as possible voters across the country during its door-to-door campaign from July 25 to August 9 last year.

The Election Commission then on Aug 20 last year started the collection of photographs and fingerprints of possible voters in 183 upazilas across the country.

The photographs and fingerprints were collected at union-level voter registration centres in 183 upazilas till September 15, while these were collected in 216 upazilas from September 16 to

October 13 in the second phase, and in 118 upazilas from October 14 to November 5 in the third phase. The data of 13.33 lakh dead people were also collected to remove their names from the country’s voter list during the 16-day data collection campaign by enumerators.

In January 2016, the Election Commission added a total of 99,898,553 voters. The EC initiated the process to create the updated voter list with photos in 2008. National ID cards were provided to more than 81 million citizens during that process.
