New BCL council likely to be announced soon

DU Correspondent

As the tenure of the incumbent Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) expired in last July, a new council of the ruling Awami League’s (AL) students’ wing might be announced soon. Meanwhile, the BCL is set to observe its 70th founding anniversary on January 4. Leaders and activists aspiring for a berth in the new council said the body might be announced today (Wednesday). They expressed this hope in reply to journalists’ questions at the cafeteria at Dhaka University's TSC yesterday.

A group of aspirants postponed a scheduled press conference on the formation of the committee, saying their higher-ups wanted to meet them and discuss the issue.

The student leaders are demanding council formation in accordance with Article 11(B and C) of the organisation’s constitution. As per the Article, the tenure of the central executive committee is two years and age of the aspirants should be within 29.

Calling off the press conference, BCL joint secretary Sayem Khan said: “We've been called by the AL highcommand to meet them tomorrow (Wednesday).”

“We'll press home our demands before AL highcommand and they will place our demands to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he added.

He also said they were postponing the press conference in deference to AL leaders.

“We hope that we'll get positive messages from the AL highcommand as they have called us to meet them. We'll obey whatever our leader (Sheikh Hasina) tells us,” he added.

BCL vice president Mehedey Hasan Rony said: “We don’t fear any threat. We postponed the press conference to show respect to senior AL leaders.”

On July 26 last year, Saifur Rahman Sohag and Zakir Hossain were elected BCL president and general secretary, respectively.

There are differences in the BCL central committee. While one group wants the council before the next national election, the present committee members are not keen on the suggestion.
