Official activities of the Ganna Bazar post office under Jhenidah Sadar are being conducted on the verandas of different shops in the absence of a departmental building.

The postmaster faces an awkward situation as the century-old post office moves from one place to another with the postmaster carrying official papers in one hand and the bag of postal stamps in the other.  The post office has no room of its own to keep official record books and documents.  Moreover, the official seals of the post office have become almost unreadable after being used for ages.

Postmaster Mizanur Rahman, who has been working for 18 years, performs his duties sitting on a mat at different places in the bazaar after the tin-shed office, arranged by the local people, became unusable a long time ago.

Ganna is a big bazaar situated on the borders of Kotchandpur, Kaliganj and Jhenidah Sadar upazila near the bank of the Chitra River.

The place has a college, a secondary and a primary school, and a bank in the bazaar. Around a thousand business establishments are also situated there.

Md Moyeen Uddin, a resident of the village and president of the Ganna Secondary School said, once ‘Zamindars’ under the Naldanga kings of Kaliganj would live here in Ganna village. One Zamindar, Abhilas Babu, established the post office on the compound of his own house around 1925.

When the ‘Zamindars’ left the country, his grandfather took some of their property in exchange. The post office was at their house situated at one corner of Ganna village near Jhenidah Sadar and Kaliganj upazila border.

However, for easy communication to the post office, the local people shifted it to Ganna Bazar about 40-45 years ago.

The official work was done in a tin-shed room. But it became dilapidated long ago over time, Moyeen added.

Union council member Joynal Abedin of Ganna village told this correspondent that the construction of a post office building was an urgent need, as the post office was virtually moving with the postmaster carrying record books and other official materials.

Towards the beginning, one Abul Karim Ali did the work of the postmaster. Later, Mizanur’s father Hatem Ali did the work for nearly 45 years.

After his father’s death, Mizanur took the responsibility and has been doing the work for 18 years.

According to postmaster Mizanur, a modern two-room post office building with a toilet could be made by the government if required land was donated by the local people or any department.  But before that, eminent local citizens would have to apply to the UNO for the establishment of a post office building here.

Then, the UNO will consult the local people, including public representatives, about where a building can be built.

When this correspondent talked to the local people, they said the Ganna Secondary School, located on seven bighas of land, could be the site for establishing a post office building.  Ganna union chairman Md Nasir Uddin Malita said he, along with others, would do whatever was needed in this regard.
