Soumitra to attend ‘Ganga Jamuna Natya O Sangskritik Ustab’ in Dhaka

Noted Indian film and stage actor-poet-playwright-director Soumitra Chattopadhyay is coming to Dhaka after a long time to attend this year’s ‘Ganga Jamuna Natya O Sangskritik Ustab’ next month. During the festival, his play ‘Chhariganga’ will be staged, which has been directed by him. Besides Amit Ranjan Biswas, Soumitra also wrote the play and eminent actors Poulomi Basu and Dwijen Bandyopadhyay acted with him in this play.
Beginning on September 4, the festival will be running at the two prominent venues of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) till September 12. Ministry of Cultural Affairs has lent its support in organising the festival.
On the opening day of the festival, Indian theatre troupe Sangstab will stage their play ‘Chhariganga’ at the National Theatre Hall of BSA at 7pm. On the other hand, Prachyanaut’s ‘Tragedy Palashbari’ will be staged at the Experimental Theatre Hall at the same time.
The festival will feature as many as 18 stage plays, eight street plays, eight music troupes, eight recitation troupes, eight dance troupes and eight solo singers. The show of staging play will begin every day from 7pm.
On September 7, Loko Natyadal’s (Siddeswari) ‘Konjush’ will be staged at the National Theatre Hall, while Desh Natok’s ‘Darpane Sharat Shashi’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall. On September 8, Rittk’s ‘Adi Raja’ (India) and Aranyak’s ‘Bhangabanga’ will be staged at the National Theatre Hall and Experimental Theatre Hall respectively. On September 9, Indian theatre troupe Anik will bring ‘Ashokananda’ on stage at the National Theatre Hall, while local troupe Padatik Natya Sangsad will stage its ‘Poramati’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall.
On September 10, Padatik Natya Sangsad (TSC) will come up with its play ‘Macbeth’ at the National Theatre Hall and Theatre’s ‘Kokilara’ (Baily Road) will be staged at the Experimental Theatre Hall. On the other hand, Nagorik Natya Sampradaya’s ‘Dewan Gazir Kissa’ and Prangone Mor’s ‘Shesher Kabita’ will be staged at the National Theatre Hall and Experimental Theatre Hall respectively.
On the concluding day of the festival on September 12, Dhaka Theatre will stage ‘Dhabaman’ at the National Theatre Hall, while Mohakal Natya Sampradaya will bring its play ‘Nilakhkhyan’ on stage at the Experimental Theatre Hall.
Apart from staging play, performance of street plays, rendition of songs, recitations, dance and many more will be organised on the open stage at the festival venue everyday from 5pm to 6pm.
To note, popular Indian troupe Anik has been organising the Ganga Jamuna festival with the name of two prominent rivers Ganga and Jamuna of two Bengals, since 1998. From the year 2012, the festival has been organised in Bangladesh with much festivity. The festival aims at strengthening cultural relations of two Bengals—Kolkata (India) and Bangladesh. l
