The High Court yesterday imposed a six-month ban on the screening of Rana Plaza, a movie based on the collapse of Rana Plaza that took place on April 24, 2013, killing 1,129 people and injuring 2,000 others. The court slapped the ban in response to a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Garment Workers Employee League President Sirajul Islam Rony on August 20, challenging legality of its production. The movie depicts garment worker Reshma Begum, who was rescued miraculously on the 17th day of the collapse. The petition said the movie would tarnish the country’s image abroad because of its portrayal of the apparel industry. The movie would fuel commotion among garment workers that might lead to deterioration of law and order, the petition added.
