The flood situation deteriorated yesterday (Monday) following inundation of fresh areas. Some of the major rivers were flowing above the danger level, leaving thousands of people to suffer in the absence of potable water and relief. Sirajganj, Bogra, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Rangpur, Jamalpur and Noagaon districts were the worst hit due to the onrush of water from the hills in the northern regions. Flood waters disrupted road communication in several districts, including Noagaon and Rangpur, making the sufferings of people more acute. Standing crops have been damaged and fish farmers face huge losses as ponds were overflowing. Flood-affected people said relief was yet to reach them.
According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, the situation in some areas of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Noagaon, Bogra, Sirajganj, Pabna, Jamalpur, Tangial, Faridpur, Shariatpur, Rajbari and Munshiganj districts may worsen in the next 72 hours.
In Noagaon, the situation worsened in Raninagar and Atrai upazila. Road communication between Noagaon Sadar and Atrai river has been cut off, as a 300-foot stretch collapsed due to strong currents, inundating about 40 villages of Noagaon. In Bogra, the flood situation worsened as the Jamuna rose in the past 24 hours. In Jamalpur, the Jumuna was flowing above the danger level at the Bahadurabad Ghat point. About 50,000 people of 60 villages in 12 unions of the three upazilas were marooned, and some 25 unions under four upazilas in the district have been inundated afresh.
