Marking the 20th death anniversary of the rape and murder of Yasmin the women community of Dinajpur urged the government to ensure safe environment for women in the country.
The occasion was observed as a day of ‘Prevention for violence against women’ elsewhere in the country.
The women of Dinajpur formed a human chain in front of Dinajpur Press Club, organised by Bangladesh Mohila Parishad, district unit. They also brought out a procession holding banners and festoons.
The women leaders alleged that the government was yet to improve the safety of women while deaths relating to dowry, rape and cruelty by a relative or husband, molestation, murder, and desertion of wives continued.
Sharifa Begum, mother of Yasmin, organised different programmes on 20th death anniversary of her daughter.
The programmes of the day included placing wreaths at Yasmin’s grave, milad and doa mahfil and offering of special prayers for Yasmin. Family members, relatives, well-wishers and neighbours of Sharifa Begum joined the milad and doa mahfil at her Golapbag house. On this day in 1995, the 15-year-old domestic worker, Yasmin, took a train for home from Dhaka. On arrival at Doshmail in Kaharol upazila, she was picked up by police, who pretended to help the girl reach her home. But, the police raped and killed her.
