Quader warns against ‘sick competition’ to get party ticket

Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader has warned party leaders of stern organisational action if they engaged in “sick competition” to get party tickets for the next general election slated for late 2018 or early 2019. “The AL is a big political party with a large number of leaders and activists. Many of them want to get party nomination for contesting the next parliamentary polls. But if anybody engages in sick competition to get a ticket, administrative and organisational actions will be taken against him or her,” he said.

He issued the warning at a programme to distribute blankets among the poor at Bangabandhu Avenue in front of the party’s central office in Dhaka.

Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said party president Sheikh Hasina was their guardian and so each and every AL leader and activist should obey her instructions.

He also said that there was no practice of democracy in the BNP. “We have seen that Abdul Awal Mintoo, a central BNP leader, has announced the name of his son, Tabith Awal, as the party’s mayoral candidate for the forthcoming Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-polls,” he added.

Mintoo’s family members were allegedly involved in the Paradise Paper scam and so BNP should not give nomination to any member of his family, he said.

Quader said the AL would not announce its candidate in this manner. The local government nomination board would nominate the contestant for the mayoral post, he added.

The AL’s Dhaka south city unit had organised the blanket distribution programme, which was chaired by its president Abul Hasnat.

The party’s secretary of social welfare and relief, Sujit Roy Nandi, the general secretary of the Dhaka City south unit, Shahe Alam Murad, and others attended the programme.
