Repression on women protested

Correspondent, Rangpur

Samajtantrik Mahila Forum, a left leaning female organisation, formed a human chain in front of Deputy Commissioner Office in the city yesterday to protest repression, violence and torture against women. The speakers said Yasmin Tragedy Day has been observed on August 24. The day is also being observed as a day of ‘prevention for violence against women’. On August 24, 1995, fourteen-year-old Yasmin Akhtar had been gang-raped by the members of law enforcement agencies and brutally murdered at ten miles point on Rangpur-Dinajpur road. The public protests ignited by Yasmin’s rape and murder made her a symbol of violence against women. The speakers in the human chain programme said torture and repression on women and child abuse have recently increased in an alarming rate in the country. But no effective steps have yet been taken against the persons who are accused in the incidents.
If the authorities concerned took some exemplary initiatives against persons who violated the women, the incidents would reduce across the country. But unfortunately no action has been yet taken against them, the speakers said. They urged all to come forward and stand united against oppression of women in the country. They call upon the progressive people to create a social movement against the repression on women. Sarifa Salwa Dina, professor of Bengali Department, Begum Rokeya University, spoke at the programme, among others.
