Huge raw jute were burnt down in a fire that broke out at two warehouses of a jute mill by Bhatpara-Bejerdanga road in Phultala upazila early yesterday, reports UNB.
Witnesses said the fire originated at a female shed of 'Ahyan Jute Mills Ltd' around 6:30am and it soon spread to the two warehouses.
On information, 13 firefighting units from different stations rushed in and doused the flame after five hours of frantic efforts, said Md Rezaul Karim, Khulna divisional assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence.
The reason behind the fire could not be known yet, he said.
Mill manager (Export) Morshed Ahmed said around 5.5 lakh tonnes of raw jute worth Tk 109 crore were gutted in the fire. "With the infrastructural damage, the loss caused by the fire would exceed Tk 125 crore," he said.
