Another great year comes to a close, and it is a good time to know what surprises lay in store for us, so here it is _  the complete list of new words and phrases that have officially made their way into the Oxford Dictionaries Online and Merriam-Webster’s Open Dictionary in 2017.

This year’s list provides an enormous storehouse of exciting new words from the world of pop culture (winterval, fitspiration), food and drink (shoestring fries, junkavore), computer and Internet (hashtivism, e-beg) and the list just keeps on going. But as exciting as this all is, it provides us with a teachable moment. So brace yourself for a super-duper collection of brand new words:

videoselfie: A video that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media. Example sentence: ‘he took a video selfie with the crowd.’

fitspiration: (Blend of fit and inspiration) A person or thing that serves as motivation for someone to sustain or improve health and fitness. Example sentence: ‘the perfect fitspiration for anyone wanting to tone up.’

winterval: (Blend of winter and festival) A culturally non-specific name applied to the winter holiday period around Christmas or to events taking place during that time.

funtastic: (Blend of fun and fantastic) Extremely enjoyable or entertaining. Example sentence: ‘she had herself a pretty funtastic weekend.’

freecycle: (Blend of free and recycle) Give away (something used or unwanted), as opposed to selling it or throwing it away, especially in an arrangement made via the Internet. Example sentence: ‘I freecycled all the household furniture left over from moving house.’

tennis dad: A man whose child plays, or whose children play, tennis; esp. a father who actively and enthusiastically supports his child or children’s participation in the sport.

shoestring fries: Very thinly cut chips.

negawatt: A unit of energy saved as a result of conservation measures, such as reducing the use of heat or electricity.

hackfest: An event or gathering dedicated to sharing information about computer programming and software development.

hand sauce: Liquid hand wash or hand sanitizer. Example sentence: ‘My hands are dirty. Pass me the hand sauce.’

frousin: A friend that is a cousin or a cousin that is a friend. Example sentence: ‘I just found out that Addison and I are frousins.’

accidial: (Blend of accident and dial) To dial accidentally.

happitizer: A small dose of motivation or inspiration that elevates one’s mood. Example sentence: ‘A quick short joke is a perfect happitizer for me.’

furmily: (Blend of fur and family) A family consisting of both human and fur covered animals. Example sentence: ‘When putting together an emergency kit for an emergency, we made sure to include food and water to all of the members of our furmily.’

intersneeze: The moment in between sneezes.

e-beg: To request money from strangers via online solicitation (such as crowdfunding).

hashtivism: Activism undertaken through social media, hashtag activism. Example sentence: ‘Hashtivism digitally has been very important to our modern society.’

emojictionary: A dictionary of emojis : a book or electronic resource that lists the definitions and common interpretations of emojis.

junkavore: A person who eats and drinks junk food exclusively.

dronographer: A person who uses a drone to capture videos or photos.

festivications: Ornamental displays usually associate with festivals and holidays. Example sentence: ‘Yesterday I put away festivications.’

downsave: To save a computer file in a format accessible to older versions of software. Example sentence: ‘If you’ve ever seen a message like this when trying to open an Adobe file it’s probably because the file wasn’t downsaved.’
