Over 14,000 Rohingyas ‘extremely vulnerable’

A total of 14,340 ‘extremely vulnerable’ Rohingyas have been identified among hundreds of thousands of persecuted people from Rakhine state, who took shelter to escape the atrocities of the Myanmar security forces, local Buddhist mobs and people from other ethnic groups.

Revealing this information, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) also said that the number of Rohingya arrivals is now much lower than the beginning of the crisis since August 25.

“...extremely vulnerability is decided on a case by case basis, but generally it covers people whose lives are at risk if they do not receive additional help, such as people who need immediate medical care, pregnant women with additional needs, and children or elderly people who have arrived on their own and need extra support to ensure they survive,” Fiona MacGregor, IOM communications and public information officer told The Independent from Cox’s Bazar in an email communication.

Responding to another question about the arrivals of Rohingyas to Bangladesh, she said, “While people are arriving in much lower numbers than the flow at the start of the crisis, they continue to arrive every day.”

According to different sources, apart from identifying 14,340 extremely vulnerable individuals, the IOM social workers also detected 409 victims of gender-based violence who were assisted through IOM’s case management. Some 3,720 have received psychological first-aid and 1,666 have been provided with health referrals.

According to IOM’s Needs and Population Monitoring (NPM) Round 7 assessed that 1,635 locations hosting Rohingya refugees in collective sites and host communities. Key findings are that 73 per cent of the refugees are living in new spontaneous settlements, 13 per cent in makeshift settlements, 9 per cent in host community locations and 5 per cent in the formal refugee camps.

Compared to the previous round, there has been a reduction in the proportion of refugees in host community locations and an increased proportion residing in collective sites.

Meanwhile, $54 of $120 million appealed by the IOM to respond to the crisis has so far been funded.

The figure is about 45 per cent of the total appealed by the United Nations migration agency. IOM and its partners are scaling up its shelter and non food items response through its distribution of over 88,500 blankets and emergency shelter, including bamboo bundles for over 1,500 families.

In response to the diphtheria outbreak, IOM is supporting a vaccination campaign for children under six years old through community workers through provision of support to vaccination teams on the ground. IOM is constructing three isolation and treatment centres to urgently increase case management and bed capacity and supporting contact tracing at several locations.
