80,000 sign petition for Netanyahu arrest
AFP, LONDON: Almost 80,000 people had by yesterday signed a petition urging the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for war crimes when he visits London next month.
The petition was launched earlier this month by British citizen Damian Moran and is posted on the government’s website.
“Under international law he (Netanyahu) should be arrested for war crimes upon arrival in the UK for the massacre of over 2,000 civilians in 2014,” Moran said, referring to the 51-day offensive by Israeli forces in Gaza last year.

Sri Lanka delays coalition cabinet
AFP, COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s president yesterday reinstated three key ministers in their posts but delayed announcing a full cabinet after a landmark agreement to form a coalition government.
Maithripala Sirisena had been expected to swear in a cabinet Monday, but official sources said that had been delayed as talks with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) continued.

Ex-president of Maldives back in jail
AFP, COLOMBO: The Maldives has put former president Mohamed Nasheed back in jail a month after his 13-year prison sentence was commuted to house arrest, his party said yesterday.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said police and prison officials clashed with its supporters as they removed Nasheed from his home in the capital Male and took him to the high-security prison island of Maafushi on Sunday night.

Thai bomber hunt hampered by faulty cameras
AFP, BANGKOK: A week after a deadly bomb tore through central Bangkok, Thailand’s police chief yesterday admitted that his force’s frantic search for those responsible has been hampered by faulty security cameras.
The trail is growing increasing cold seven days after the bombing, which killed 20 people in the capital’s commercial heart, mostly Asian tourists, and wounded scores more.
