One accused makes confession in court

Case handed to PBI; two arrested

Four robbers had entered into the home and raped four women while one waited outside on the night on December 12 at a house under Karnaphuli Police Station in Chittagong, said an accused before a Chittagong court yesterday as the judge recorded his confessional statement. Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) yesterday arrested two accused named Mizan Mattabor and Abu Sama. Among them, Mizan Mattabor gave confessional statement before the court of Chittagong Metropolitan magistrate Al Imran, said Nirmalendo Bikash Chakrabarty, Additional Deputy Commissioner (prosecution) of Chittagong Metropolitan police (CMP).

Quoting the confessional statement, Nirmalendo Bikash Chakrabarty said the accused confessed to his crime. He also said, “On that night four robbers entered into the home breaking a window. In the absence of any male member, they have raped four women, one after another.”  

On Monday, CMP admitted their “partial negligence” for not taking immediate action and the delay in filing the case and to arrest the accused. PBI was yesterday assigned to investigate the sensational rape case.

“After we were assigned to investigate the case, we arrested Mizan Mattabor. Gleaning information from him, we have

brought Abu Sama in our custody who is the prime suspect. We are trying to arrest the other accused as well,” said Md Moin Uddin, additional superintend of police of PBI Chittagong Metro.

“Four robbers commited the crime led by Abu Sama. Abu Sama is a local resident in the village and the other four are outsiders. The people who were arrested earlier by Karnaphuli Police Station were not involved in the crime as we found in our investigation so far,” added Moin Uddin.

According to the case history, a gang of robbers had entered the home of an UAE expatriate by breaking a window around midnight on December 12. In the absence of any male member of the family, the robbers the house and also raped the four women at gunpoint. The robbers left around 3 am after taking cash, jewellery and mobile phones.  One of the victims was an expectant mother, two others were her sisters-in-law, and the fourth was a relative who had come to visit the family.

The women reportedly went to Karnaphuli police station the next day to lodge a complaint. But the police allegedly refused to file the case over a complication with their address. Following an intervention by State Minister for Land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed, police finally filed a case five days after the incident. Moreover, it was alleged that police had delayed arresting the accused even after filing of the case.
