Mejbah, Shirin retain 100m sprint titles

Bangladesh Army finished on top of the medal table in the NRB Commercial Bank 41st National Athletics Championship with winning 47 medals closely followed by Navy who won 32 medals yesterday.

Held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, on the final day of the three-day national meet Army won 15 gold, 21 silver and 11 bronze medals when their close rival Bangladesh Navy also won 15 gold, nine silver and eight bronze medal.

Bangladesh Jail won one gold, two silver and five bronze when Bangladesh Ansar won one gold and one bronze and Bangladesh Air Force won one gold medal.      

Mejbah Ahmed and Shirin Akhter kept their supremacy as the fastest man and the fastest women in the country when both the Bangladesh Navy athletes finished first leaving their rivals behind in the in the 100 meters sprint yesterday.

It is the record seventh times Mejbah clocked the best timing in the 100 meters sprint with 10:783 seconds when he left behind his Navy team-mate Abdur Rouf, finished on 10:793 seconds and Shariful Islam was third with 11.072 seconds.

Shirin also won the sixth gold in a row in the 100 metres sprint including summer and national meets, when she took 12:279 seconds yesterday while this time all are electronic timing.

Shohagi Begum, fellow athlete of Shirin won the silver with 12:440 seconds followed by Shushmita Ghosh finished with 12:626 seconds.

Mejbah looked very happy after finish the run ahead of all and in his immediate reaction said, “I am grateful to my parents and the coach, thanks to Almighty Allah for keeping up my supremacy.”

“It is really feelings good, to set a record and I did it with winning the crown of the 100 sprint for seventh time, it is very good record. Today is my second best timing. My best timing in 2013 in the Bangladesh Games with 10:70,” said Mejbah, who wants to say good bye to 100 meters sprint.

“My target was to achieve the feat of Shamim Bhai’s record of seventh times fastest man and did not successfully, now I intend to be the best for eighth times and want to retire from 100 metres,” said Mejbah.
