Laxmipur: Police rescued five kidnapped fishermen and arrested four pirates from Motirhat fishery ghat area in Kamalnagar upazila yesterday morning, reports UNB.
The arrestees were-Shah Alam, Jamal, Tarek and Shipon, residents of Char Ramni village.
A gang of pirates numbering 10/12 swooped on five trawlers when some fishermen were catching fish in the Meghna river of Char Gajaria area of Ramgati upazila on Saturday evening.
The gang looted valuables including fish, net, solar panel and oil, worth Tk 20 lakh.
The gang also kidnapped five fishermen and demanded Tk five lakh as ransom from their respective families, said the victim fishermen.
When the pirates came to Motirhat fish ghat in the morning for selling fish the kidnapped fishermen started screaming from the trawlers. Later, locals caught four pirates red handed.
On information, police arrested the pirates and rescued the kidnapped fishermen, said Akul Chandra Biswas, officer-in-charge of Kamalnagar Police Station.
