Police arrested an alleged mugger in connection with the death of a seven-month-old boy who fell off his mother’s lap and died during a mugging incident in the capital’s Doyaganj area on December 18. Officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station Anisur Rahman said Rajib, 20, hailing from Damuda of Shariatpur, was held from Doyaganj early yesterday. Rajib lives in a slum near Gandaria Railway Station area.
Rajib has confessed to his crime, the Officer-in-charge (OC) said. He is a drug addict and was involved in several muggings, he said.
On December 18, the infant, Arafat, son of Aklima and Shah Alam Gazi, inhabitants of Shariatpur Sadar upazila, sustained serious injuries to his head after the fall. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Aklima and her husband had come to Dhaka for the treatment of their two-year-old son Alamin.
Early in the morning of December 18 Aklima along with Arafat was going to her sister’s residence by a rickshaw and fell victim to muggers in Doyaganj in the capital while her husband went to Shyamoli’s Children Hospital with Alamin.
The infant fell from the moving rickshaw to the ground as a mugger attempted to snatch the bag of Aklima. Shah Alam filed a murder case accusing one unidentified person with Jatrabari Police Station.
