UK wants Dhaka to prosper further

UK’s Minister of State for International Development Desmond Swayne yesterday said his country wants to see Bangladesh prosper and develop further and mentioned that both the countries enjoy very ‘healthy’ relations, reports UNB. “Bangladesh has performed very, very well in respect of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). We want to see that continue as you move to the middle-income status,” he told reporters after his meeting with Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali at the Ministry. Swayne said the overall purpose of his visit is to strengthen the very healthy relations mentioned that they have half a million people in the UK with Bangladeshi heritage. “That’s very important to us. We want to see Bangladesh develop.”
The UK State Minister said they discussed a number of issues of mutual interest, for example the upcoming climate change conference in December and the important role Bangladesh has in it now. Responding to a question, he said, of course, every country faces issues of problems all around and the more all will work together the better it will be.
The issue of women’s status and role in economic development was also discussed.
During the meeting, the Foreign Minister expressed deep gratitude for the continued British Development Assistance to Bangladesh since its independence, particularly in education, health, sanitation, governance, climate change, natural disasters - and attainment of the relevant MDGs.
The DFID State Minister has appreciated the ongoing pace of development in Bangladesh.
Earlier, in the morning he arrived here to reaffirm Britain’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s development and engaging with local audiences about the UK government’s priorities.
“2015 is a crucial year for development and I’m very pleased to be here in Bangladesh,” he said on his arrival.
The British minister said both the countries have a strong
relationship built over the years and he wants to see that
become even stronger as Bangladesh flourishes and leads its own development.
