Bangladesh stands on the 89th position in the recently published Global Food Security Index-2017, which is the lowest among the South-Asian countries, reports UNB. The general secretary of Bangladesh Food Security Network, Nurul Alam Masud, disclosed this at a press briefing in the city's Dhaka Reporters' Unity yesterday morning.
Nurul Alam said though Bangladesh has gained recognition as lower-middle income country in 2015, in case of food security it secured the 89th position, which is the lowest among the South-Asian countries.
Ireland tops the Global Food Security Index with 85.6 points, while Burundi is at the bottom with 25.1 points. Bangladesh got a score of 39.7 to be ranked 89. Scores of other countries in the region are: India rank 74 with 48.9 score, Pakistan 77 with score 47.8, Nepal 81 rank with 44.5, Myanmar at 80 with 44.8 and Sri Lanka at 66th place securing 53.0 points.
The Bangladesh Food Security Network also proposed a six-point recommendations including forming a Food Security Act. President of Bangladesh Food Security Network Dr Mohammad Joynul Abedin said most of the countries of the world have right to food law but Bangladesh doesn't have one.
"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina earlier in South-Asian Right to Food Conference assured government's devotion to establish food security in the country. So the government should consider formation of a right to food law on priority basis." he said.
Organisation's vice-president Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, General Secretary of Be Safe Foundation Atiur Rahman Miton, ActionAid assistant director Amit Dey were present in The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Food Security Index (GFSI), sponsored by DuPont, provides a common framework for understanding the root causes of food insecurity by looking at the dynamics of food systems around the world.
By creating a common framework against which to benchmark a country’s food security, the GFSI has created a unique country-level food-security measurement tool that addresses the issues of affordability, availability and utilisation in 113 countries around the world.
