Bangladesh Navy shined on the first day of the 41st National NRB Commercial Bank Athletics Championship when they clinched 12 medals which included seven gold, one silver and four bronze at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Abdur Rouf and Shirin Akhter won the gold medals in the men’s and women’s 200 meters sprint, Alamgir Hossain Alo won the gold medal in the 400 meters, Jafrin Akhter in women’s discuss throw, M Manzurul Mollah in triple jump, Irin Akhter in long jump and Azharul Silam in men’s discuss throw. Bangladesh Army was in the second position in the first day with winning 16 medals – four gold, nine silver and three bronze medals.
General Dahlan Al Hamad vice-president of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) and the president of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) inaugurated the three meet as the chief guest. Abdur Rouf, who has been in the Navy team for last eight years, first time compete in the 200 meters and won the gold.
Rouf, who has experiences running in the international track in the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku and in the Asian Championship in India, clocked 21:79 seconds to finish the race. He was followed by his fellow Navy athlete Careful and Sinful Islam Khan of Bangladesh Jail.
Shirin Akhter, fellow team-mate of Rouf, took 25:57 seconds to win the women’s gold when Hashemite Ghosh and Boras Haxtun of Bangladesh Army won silver and bronze respectively.
Interestingly both the athletes’ main event is 100 meters sprint and they are eyeing to make it double delight with winning the most precious medal of 100 meters’ gold. The 100-metre sprint will take place tomorrow.
Rouf in his immediate reaction after winning the gold, said, “I had three months practice for this National Championship and expected to finish with better timing but could not, because I was sick and on the bed for 25 days before coming to the competition, so my expected target was not accomplished.”
“Actually my favourites event is 200 meters and also run in the 100 and 400 metres relay,” said Rouf. About his favourite event 100 meters sprint, when he won the silver behind the gold medal winner Mejbah, Rouf said, “Expecting to win the gold this time, last year lost to Mejbah but it is a fraction of seconds, so any thing can be happened.”
Shirin Akhter, who returned on track after a season when she was the hattrick gold medal winner in the 2013, 2014 and 2015, did not take part in the 2016 championship.
“My main event is 100 meters sprint on request of Navy I ran in the 200 metres, now I am looking forward to win the 100 meter god medal.”
Alamgir Hossain Alo, also the athlete of Bangladesh Navy won the 400 gold with clocking 53:92 seconds.
Meanwhile, General Dahlan Al Hamad, vice-president of the IAAF and the president of the AAA and the president of the Qatar Athletics Federation had a press meet yesterday when he said that they will help Bangladesh for the development of athletics.
Dahlan said, “We have programme to provide instructors to teach head coaches, assistant coaches and trainers who will learn and Bangladesh will be highly benefited and it is the best way to develop athletics in Bangladesh.”
“The instructor will teach the local coaches how to pick-up the talents.”
“My advice to the federation to take programme for the school, without having sports in school you will not have future athletes,” said Dahlan.
Dahlan while replying to a query said that he will personally appeal to Qatar government, who has a plan to provide financial help two Asian countries. He will try to provide an athletics track to Bangladesh.
