Road crashes kill nine
At least nine people, including a policeman, were killed in separate road accidents in Rajbari, Barisal and in the capital yesterday. In Rajbari, four people were killed and 34 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Goalanda upazila. The accident took place at around 11-45am on the Rajbari-Khulna highway when a Jhenidah bound bus collided with a Daulatdia bound bus coming from Kushtia, leaving four people dead on the spot and injuring 34 others.
Three of the deceased were identified as two bus drivers Abu Shama, 45, Zakir Hossain, 35, and Rahim, 46, passenger of a bus, while the identity of another could not be known immediately.
In Barisal, three people, including a police constable, were killed as a bus hit the policeman and an auto-rickshaw in Gournadi bus stand area of Gournadi upazila yesterday morning.
The deceased were identified as Zahid Hossain, 33, a highway police constable, Shahjada Sharif, 35, joint convener of upazila Swechchhasebak League, and Siraj Sarder, 60, a local vegetable trader.
In the capital, two people were killed in separate accidents. At Gabtali Bus stand area, a speeding truck knocked down an unidentified old man, aged about 65, when he was crossing the road. A rickshaw puller was killed after a speedy private car hit him near the Indoor Stadium in the citys Pallabi area last night.
Police said the identity of the rickshaw puller could not be identified immediately.
