The ruling Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said his party AL wins politically in the just-concluded Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) elections where Jatiya Party candidate Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa has secured a big lead towards victory.
“Though AL candidate is likely to be defeated in the election, but AL wins politically in the polls. It is the victory of politics and democracy,” he said this at a post-polls briefing yesterday at the party Chief Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office in the city.
Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said “Through this elections, it has been proved that free, fair and credible elections are possible under the Sheikh Hasina government and it is a message for BNP for the next national election.”
However, the AL general secretary accepted his party’s defeat in the RCC polls when only 18 out of 93 polling centers’ results were unveiled by the different media outlets.
Extending thanks to the Election Commission (EC) for holding the RCC polls peacefully, Quader said the just concluded Rangpur City elections will place in the record book of fair elections of EC.
Earlier in the day AL Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak at a press conference at Dhanmondi office alleged that BNP leaders are spreading falsehood over the Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) elections in a bid to make the polls ‘controversial’.
Elections to the city corporation were held in a free, fair and credible manner. None brought any allegation against the polls except BNP. No irregularities have taken place during the voting hours, he said.
“BNP spreads lies over any issue. It is an old habit of the party,” he said.
