Toward peace and development for all mankind

BY WANG YIWEI

At a high-level dialogue between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and political parties from around the world held December 1, Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed out in his keynote speech that the CPC strives for both the wellbeing of the Chinese people and for overall human progress. He stressed that everything the CPC has done is designed to promote the happiness of the Chinese people, the rejuvenation of the country, and peace and development for all mankind.

For decades, the CPC has persisted in “seeking peace and development for mankind.” In the future, it will, as always, contribute to world peace, work for common development goals around the world and contribute to exchanges and mutual learning across civilizations. Among China’s contributions in recent years, the Belt and Road Initiative has drawn the attention of the world.

The Belt and Road Initiative is one of the most important public goods that China has provided to the international community. It represents China’s wisdom for both globalization and global governance. The initiative, since it was proposed more than four years ago, has aroused a warm response from the international community. It has created profound changes in the way China relates to the world, and embodies the county’s overall values.

China is initially willing to communicate its experience and promote the common prosperity of the world. Creating the Belt and Road will help share China’s experience of reform and opening up, industrialization and poverty alleviation. It will help involved countries to reduce development costs, follow paths suitable to their own national conditions and even prolonged and profound development goals.

China’s development programmes are in line with the great causes of mankind. Some analysts believe that the connectivity-oriented Belt and Road Initiative provides a powerful driver for globalization. Global governance requires wide consultations, joint contributions and shared benefits. National governance requires tackling both the symptoms and the root causes of problems while enhancing group coordination. “Any circumstance hitting a limit will begin to change. Change will in turn lead to an unimpeded state, and then lead to continuity.” Continuity is the key to sustainable development and security.

In a third move, China is assuming more international responsibilities and providing more for the public good. In terms of economics, the new trade volume created by the Belt and Road Initiative may exceed 2.5 trillion U.S. dollars over the next ten years, which will invigorate economic globalization. At the institutional level, China has established new types of multilateral financial institutions. These include the Silk Road Fund and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, moves that have prompted the International Monetary Fund to complete quotas and governance reforms. On a spiritual level, the Belt and Road Initiative, new types of international relations and the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, all help to carry forward the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, so that all countries “share a common stake” in a positive sense.

Currently, human society is at a new starting point. All countries should seize the historic opportunity and make the right choices so as to jointly create a brighter future for mankind.(This article was first published in People’s Daily Overseas Edition and is abridged for use here.)
