Bangladesh Under-19 team’s best chance to make an impact came at the home ground when they hosted the last Youth World Cup. However they had to be contended to play the semi-final and finished the tournament in third position but that was the best result in their history they achieved.
This time they would have to play the tournament in New Zealand, a condition that didn’t suit even the senior teams from the sub-continent. The task was arguably tougher than ever but Bangladesh youngsters remained confident of eclipsing their previous result in the upcoming World Cup, slated to begin on January 13. To acclimatise with the condition, Bangladesh would leave the country on December 26, more than two weeks before the start of the tournament.
“Our initial target is to play match by match and book a place in the semi-final. That’s the realistic goal we can set at the moment,” said team’s opener Pinak Ghosh. “But it’s sure we want to win the World Cup. Therefore we need to keep the process right.”
Pinak however was unfazed by the condition, saying, “We have talked to our senior players like Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Soumya Sarkar, Mosaddek Hossain Saikat about the condition of the New Zealand. They gave us some idea.”
“Normally the host country prepares the wicket in line with the guidance of ICC in global tournament. So the wicket won’t be that tougher.”
