Electric motors being used to get supply water

Many of the house owners living in Tangail town suck municipal tap water into their tanks illegally using electric motors.  
There are at least 1,000 electric motors fitted with narrow pipes to draw the water from the main supply line run in front of every house in the municipality.
Such illegal practice of getting supply water is depriving the honest consumer of their due share and the municipal authorities of vital revenue.
Besides, the electricity is misused in running so many motors for diverting the flow of the municipal water.
However, the affected residents have repeatedly complained to the municipal authorities about the problem that has cut down on the share of legitimate users.
Mizanur Rahman, assistant engineer of Tangail municipality, said it could not arrange water supply to about one third area of Tangail municipality. It charges Tk 15 for one thousand litres of water for office and Tk 6 for household uses. On the other hand, the municipality spends Tk 300 in lifting 1000 litres of water, he said adding it pays Tk 10 lakh as power bill on account of water supply.
He also said it is difficult to disconnect the illegal motors. “Because, the house owners do not cooperate with the officials at the time of raid,” he said.
Residents said it is all about vote politics involved in this matter. The employees of the municipality have to face embarrassment while snapping illegal electric motor connections, they said.
Shafiqul Hoque Shameem, convener of water supply department, said  the authorities have been trying to arrange water supply to all areas of the municipality. But for various reasons, including malpractices of some dwellers, they are unable to supply as per demand. Awareness of the town dwellers are needed for creating the opportunity.
Panel acting mayor Manobendra Lal Milton has said it is the duty of the municipal authorities to supply water to every house. But they can supply one third of the total demand, he said adding various reasons are responsible for the problem. They are trying to produce more water to meet its demand and disconnect the illegal lines for smooth supply of water.
