Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque yesterday justified the recent ‘gunfight’ saying law enforcers have the right to protect themselves. “The police (personnel) open fire in self-defence when they come under attack,” said the police chief while talking to newsmen after a programme in the capital. The IGP was addressing the inaugural ceremony of a two-weeklong training course titled ‘Intelligence Analysis for Tiger Range Countries’ at Police Staff College in the city. Shahidul Haque claimed that the law and order situation is in a good state in the country. He, however, said the government was exerting all of its efforts to contain those who are trying to cause deterioration in law and order. When his attention was drawn to the killing of the activists of ruling Awami League’s (AL) student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in ‘gunfight’ with law enforcers, he claimed that the terrorists have no identity. “They take shelters under different political parties from time to time to pursue their personal gains, so actions are being taken against them by considering them terrorists,” he added. UNB adds: a suspected robber was killed and two others were injured in a ‘gunfight’ between his cohorts and police at Par Gendaria Satpathi in South Keraniganj early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Yusuf, 35, son of late Ayub Ali, a resident of Hajar Bigha village of Dohar upazila, while the injured as Ismael,29, son of Abdul Jalil Sarder, a resident of Madhya Matoali village in Goshaihat upazila of Shariatpur, and Sohrab,30, son of Abdul Halim, a resident of Awliabad village in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur district. Sub-inspector of Keraniganj Model Police Station Obaidul said tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area while a gang of robbers were preparing to commit robbery there at about 1:45 am.
