OIC slams Suu Kyi �inaction�

Iyad Ameen Madani, visiting secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), yesterday came down heavily on the government of Myanmar, accusing it of obstructing all the avenues to reach some sort of agreement to address the protracted Rohingya issue.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting with Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali at his office, the OIC secretary general described the mistreatment of Rohingya population by Myanmar as a human rights tragedy and expressed OIC’s grave concern over the issue.

The OIC secretary general also criticised Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi for not speaking in favour of the Rohingya Muslims, who are being subjected to atrocities.
“The Government of Myanmar is obstructing every door, every window and every road to reach some sort of agreement to address the problem,” he said, while replying to a query regarding the Rohingya issue.
“OIC has been very concerned with the (Rohingya) issue. The Muslims in Myanmar have been subjected to atrocities. As you know, they are now being deprived of their nationality. Nationality has been taken away from them,” said Madani.
“The whole world should object to this,” he said, strongly criticising Myanmar government’s ‘policy of segregation’.
Highlighting the plight of the Rohingyas, the OIC secretary general said that many of them are living in camps without any access to education, healthcare and housing.
“We are approaching (the Myanmar government) and we are trying in every way to talk to them, but they are not listening to anybody,” he said.
Even, Madani alleged, the Myanmar government refused OIC aid meant for Muslims and people belonging to other religions who were recently affected by a natural disaster.
“The government there is refusing and closing the doors to any humanitarian aid to their own population,” he said.  
Madani said that as an organisation, the OIC is active in international forums to bring this to the attention of the world.
“Last forum was the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva where a resolution was made based on the action taken by the OIC member states of that council. That clearly condemned the government of Myanmar,” he said. nThe OIC is also trying to initiate dialogue between Muslims and Buddhists and two such dialogues have already been held in Thailand and Malaysia, he added.
The OIC Secretary General also observed that some monks and politicians are trying to benefit from the ongoing situation in Myanmar and that with elections coming up, there is no voice on part of the politicians in this regard.
