Case filed, probe body formed

A case of unnatural death was filed with Chawkbazar police station of Chittagong late on Monday night over the death of 10 people in a stampede at the ‘qulkhwani’ of former Chittagong city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury at a community centre in the port city. Arun Das, the brother of one of the deceased, Jantu Das, filed the case, said Nurul Huda, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chawkbazar police station. Ten people were killed and at least 18 others seriously injured in a stampede at the ‘qulkhwani’ of ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, former mayor of the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), which was held around 1:30pm on Monday. The Chittagong district administration formed a

five-member committee to probe the incident on Monday night. The committee was asked to submit its report within seven working days.

Md Mashukur Rahman Shikder, additional deputy commissioner (general), said: “We have formed a five-member probe committee led by additional district magistrate Md Mashhudul Karim. The committee has been asked to submit its report within seven working days.”

The other members of the committee are: deputy civil surgeon Dr Md Humayun Kabir, assistant commissioner of police (Chawkbazar zone) Nobel Chakma, public works department engineer SM Shahriar Newaz and assistant director for consumer rights protection, Mohammad Hasanuzzaman.

Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel, son of the late Mohiuddin Chowdhury, an organising secretary of the ruling Awami League (AL), said, “We arranged the ‘qulkhwani’ at 15 separate venues so that people did not face any hassles while participating in it. As my father was involved in non-communal politics, we arranged the ‘qulkhwani’ for them at Rima Community Centre. Unfortunately, the tragic incident occurred there. Before our mourning for my father’s death ends, we now have to mourn more 10 deaths.”
