Harnessing youth potential

Harnessing youth potential

At the 13th National Youth Red Crescent Camp 2017, the honourable President has called for more trained young people in tackling natural disasters and calamities. We commend such a call because standing at the 46th year of independence, Bangladesh’s greatest asset currently is a dynamic young population bubbling with creativity, drive and innovative ideas. Arguably, the constructive force of the young becomes only too apparent when, on the social media platforms, we see united stands against any social malady, exploitation or manipulation of power.  It’s this sense of righteousness which needs to be used to its full potential to make the country immune to natural disasters.  So far, the government has taken the task of sensitizing the masses about natural calamities like floods, droughts and earthquakes, but the youth of a certain area are more likely to play a vital role in raising awareness among the people on a variety of issues, ranging from natural disasters to vital changes in social credo.

For instance, the digital revolution which has been triggered in Bangladesh will only see a fully successful end when young people advocate it as youth volunteers.

In the villages, IT training spots plus small computer shacks in rural bazaars run by young people take the country towards total connectivity plus a countrywide digital awareness.

The President has rightly said that Bangladesh has received international accolades for managing to deal with natural problems, which has injected a confidence in the whole nation that whatever happens, we can overcome it. However, since Bangladesh is on an earthquake zone, more training is required for young people to be ready to deal with such a natural aberration.

Since independence, young groups from developed nations have visited Bangladesh, worked in rural areas, helping the people of this country to learn the methods of using youth power for the benefit of larger society. It’s time, we have our own youth based units in each district to regularly carry out social reforming acts as part of making community living more cohesive.

Galvanising the young in Bangladesh under one umbrella and inspiring them with ideals of tolerance and liberalism is all the more important in an age when the young are often indoctrinated to carry out society destroying acts of terror. The youth games will begin soon; hopefully, the core message will be to take up sport and other laudable activities to uphold plus defend human rights, secularism, gender equality and religion of love, not revulsion.
