Govt to file review plea for Sayeedy�s death: AG
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam yesterday said that the government would file a review petition with the Supreme Court seeking death sentence for war crimes convict Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi once the full copy of the verdict is published.
We will file a review petition with the Supreme Court seeking his death penalty after getting the full copy of its verdict, the chief law officer of the state said to reporters at his office yesterday.
The attorney general said he is eagerly waiting to obtain copies of the verdicts relating in the war crimes cases of Jamaat leaders Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid and Delwar Hossain Sayeedi.
The apex court had upheld the International Crimes Tribunals verdict of death penalty for Mujahid, but it had awarded jail unto death for Sayedee for his wartime offences. As per the provision, we will file review petition with the apex court in Sayedees case seeking death penalty for him in war crimes case after obtaining the full copy of the verdict, he noted.
However, the chief law officer of the state could not mention any specific date when the apex court might release the full verdict in the case against Sayedee.
Mahbubey Alam, however, hoped that the apex court would release soon the full verdict in the case of another war crimes convict Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid.
According to sources, the writing of the verdict in Mujahid case has already been completed. Now, the judges are revising the copy of the verdict. After completion of their revision, the verdict will be made public soon, said sources with the apex court.
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court in its verdict on September 17 last year commuted the death penalty of Sayeedi to imprisonment until death for crimes committed against humanity during the War of Liberation in 1971.
The apex court commuted his punishment to imprisonment until death following an appeal filed by the Jamaat leader against the ICT-1 judgment.
Earlier, on February 28, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Sayedee to death for war crimes.
In another verdict, the apex court, on June 16 this year, upheld the death penalty of Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid for committing crimes against humanity in 1971.
The government can start the process to execute Mujahid after getting the full judgment. Mujahid can seek a review of the verdict within 15 days of receiving the full text of the judgment, as per the law.
If the review petition is rejected, he will have only one option to seek presidential clemency to save his life.
