Flooding in north deteriorates

The flood situation has worsened, particularly in the northern region, with thousands of people spending their days without relief materials.
The deluge has hit Lamonirhar, Sirajganj, Gaibandha, Rangpur, Jamalpur and Bogra districts, forcing the affected people to take shelter in safer places with their children and belongings. But they are facing great hardships due to lack of food and pure drinking water.
The Brahmaputra, Teesta and Dharal rivers are flowing above the danger mark in the downstream.
In Rangpur, the flood situation in eight upazilas of the district deteriorated due to heavy rain in the last couple of days. The affected upazilas are Kaunia, Pirgachha, Mithapukur, Badarganj, Taraganj, Pirganj, Rangpur Sadar and low-lying areas under the Rangpur City Corporation.
Houses in low-lying areas of the district are under water and people with their belongings, including cattle, have taken shelter in school buildings and high lands. Besides, vast tracts of aman crops and vegetable fields have gone under water.
Touhidul Islam, UNO of Gangachara, said the eight unions of Gangachara upazila are flooded due to heavy rain.  
In Bogra, the flood situation in Sariakandi and Dhunut upazilas has worsened, with the Jamuna showing a marked rise in the last 24 hours (till Sunday afternoon). Already, 20 villages of the two upazilas have been flooded by floodwaters. At least 60 educational institutions are also closed for floods, said Md. Abdul Mottaleb, assistant engineer of the WDB.
Officials of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said the water level of the Jamuna increased by 30cm due to heavy rain and onrush of hilly waters from the upstream. The river is flowing 43cm above its danger mark at Sariakandi and Dhunut points in the district.
At least 10,000 people living on the chars and near the Jamuna river basin areas have been marooned. Some have shifted cattle and poultry to safe places. Water entered Nowkhila PN High School and Chandanbaisha Zame Mosque on Sunday afternoon.
