Stalker hacks SSC examinee to death in Sunamganj

Sunamganj: A young man knifed an SSC examinee to death on Saturday night after she rejected his proposal of love at Sakitpur village of Dirai in the district, reports UNB.

The victim was identified as Humayra Aktar Munni, SSC examinee of Dirai Girls High School.

Victim’s relatives said a local miscreant, Yahya, used to stalk Munni on her way to school. They also settled the matter once in a local arbitration but Yahya continued his misconduct. Finally on Saturday evening, Yahya along with his associates stormed into Munni’s house and hacked her indiscriminately, they said. Later, in serious condition on the way to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital, Munni succumbed to her injuries.

District police superintendent Md Habibullah visited the spot. Police is trying to spot the killers, said officer-in-charge of Dirai Police Station Md Mostafa Kamal.

Ferry services resume after 7hrs

Ferry services on Paturia-Daulatdia route in the Padma River resumed after seven hours of disruption caused by dense fog early yesterday.

Manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Aricha Nasir Mohammad Chowdhury said the ferry services were disrupted from 10:30 pm on Sunday to 5:30 am yesterday due to poor visibility caused by thick fog.

Ten ferries at both Paturia and Daulatdia ghats remained stranded while over five hundreds of other vehicles were waiting at the both ghats for crossing the river, he added.

Besides, six ferries were stuck in the middle of the river.

Later, ferry services resumed around 5:30 am as fog disappeared.

Boatman dies in Sunamganj  

Sunamganj: A boat driver drowned as his boat capsized in the Surma river in Chhatak Sadar of the district early yesterday, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Raju Ahmed, 17, son of Aftab Uddin hailing from Rajanpur in Dohalia union of Doarabazar upazila. According to police source, Raju was sleeping when the boat capsized and he went missing since.

Later, a diving team of Chhatak Fire Service recovered his dead body around 11am in the morning.

The body was sent to morgue for autopsy.

‘Rajpunnah festival’ to begin on Thursday in Bandarban

Bandarban: The 140th Rajpunnah festival, the biggest traditional festival of tribal Bomang community to pay annual land tax to the king, will begin in Bandarban on Thursday, reports UNB.  To mark the three-day occasion, a folk fair will also be held. The 17th Raja (chief) of Bomang circle Engineer U Chaw Prue will formally collect tax from the inhabitants in a traditional way.

The king along with the Royal guests will arrive at the Raj Durbar amidst sound of bugle. His courtiers and other token soldiers, all attired in traditional dresses, will formally receive the king. The much-awaited festival, introduced in 1875, is organised mainly for collecting land tax from the inhabitants after harvesting ‘jhum’ crops.

Awami League General Secretary and also Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader will attend the inaugural ceremony as chief guest while State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Bir Bahadur U Shoi Shing is expected to join the function.

Two held with Indian liquor

Sunamganj: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested two people and recovered Indian liquor worth around Tk 2 lakh from their possession at Muksedpur area of Tahirpur thana in the district on early yesterday, reports UNB.

The arrestees are- Chan Mia, 40 son of Madar Ali and Md Jahangir Alam, 20, son of Md Shahjahan Mia both hailing from Muksedpur, said a RAB press release.

Tipped off, a team of Rab conducted the drive around 2am in a residential house of the area and arrested the two, recovering bottles of Indian whiskey brand Officer’s Choice.

Later, Chan Mia and Jahangir Alam were handed over to Tahirpur Police Station.
